Caustic Soda Pearls, commonly referred to as pearl alkali, are a solid form of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). They are named for their uniform spherical or granular appearance and are also known in industry as granular caustic soda. The product appears as white, translucent spherical or pearl-shaped solid particles. It is highly hygroscopic and strongly alkaline, readily soluble in water with significant heat release, forming a clear and strongly alkaline solution.

Produced mainly by the advanced ion membrane process, caustic soda pearls feature high purity, low impurity content, rapid dissolution, and consistent quality. They are widely used in water treatment, pulp and paper, textiles, petroleum refining, metallurgy, chemicals, and daily chemical industries.

Applications of Caustic Soda Pearls

(1) Water Treatment. Used for pH adjustment, water softening, and removal of heavy metals in industrial wastewater and municipal treatment systems.

(2) Pulp & Paper Industry. Applied in pulping, de-inking, and bleaching processes to improve pulp purity and paper quality.

Caustic soda pearls are essentially high-purity sodium hydroxide, possessing all the typical chemical properties of NaOH, while their distinctive physical form provides additional practical advantages in industrial applications.

Strong Alkalinity & Corrosiveness. As a strong alkali, Caustic soda pearls are highly corrosive and react vigorously with acids in neutralization reactions. They can cause severe damage to human tissues, including skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract, and are also highly corrosive to non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and zinc.

High Chemical Reactivity. The product readily absorbs moisture from the air and undergoes deliquescence. It also reacts with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form sodium carbonate, which may affect product quality if not properly stored.

Excellent Solubility. Sodium hydroxide pearls dissolve rapidly in water, releasing a significant amount of heat. During dissolution, the pearls should be added slowly into water with continuous stirring. Water must never be added directly onto the pearls, as the intense heat generated may cause splashing and pose safety risks.

Physical Form Advantages. Compared with caustic soda flakes, the pearl form offers uniform particle size, superior flowability, and reduced caking tendency. This allows for more accurate feeding and dosing, as well as faster and more uniform dissolution. Various particle size specifications are available, typically including 0.6–0.8 mm, 0.8–1.0 mm, and other customized ranges to meet specific industrial requirements.
